Video: TechIQ Tip - eBooks from your library

A demonstration on how to checkout ebooks from your library for reading on your computer, iPhone, iPad or Kindle reader. Your library's system may be different, but most of the basics should be very similar to the Los Angeles Public Library site, which I use of this demo. LAPL's partner, Overdrive e-Media, services many of the larger library systems in the US so you may find the same system at your local library. Ebooks from your library is a great service and I hope this video will help people get more use out of it. If you have questions about specific library systems or other places you might find downloadable ebooks, please add a comment to this post and I will assist you. Can't see the video above? Google Chrome responsible for Macbook Air slow downs and crashes

Ouch! I use Google Chrome as my main browser, but I have noticed a tendency to eat up memory to the point where it slows to a crawl. I am not sure if this is related to this Macbook Air specific issue, but it wouldn't surprise me at all. On a whim today I asked Chrome to check for updates and, sure enough, there was one waiting to be installed. If you are experiencing problems specific to your browser, checking for updates should be the first thing you try. In fact, this is true for any issues with your computer. Check for updates of the operating system and apps and then give your computer a restart. You would be surprised how many issues that resolves. It also goes to show that it is always important to remember that an individual app can still cause major problems with your computer, no matter how much the operating system may try to prevent it. Apple releases new Podcasts iPhone/iPad app

After the announcement of iOS 6, the upcoming system update for the iPhone and iPad line, some people noticed that podcasts seemed to have disappeared from the the Music app, where they used to live. Today, Apple released a new Podcasts app that gives podcasts there own app and, I think, renewed status, in the New Media world. One of the biggest new feature of the Podcasts app is that it allows you to subscribe and automatically download podcasts without using iTunes on a Mac or PC. This is in line with other changes in iOS that allowed you to activate and update iPhones and iPads without connecting them to a computer. You can download the new Podcasts app directly from the iTunes App store on your computer or iOS device. Download Podcasts App   Screenshots from the new Podcasts app on my iPhone 4

Skype has some software update goodness for Windows, Mac and Linux users today. I just got my Mac updates while running Skype for the first time today. iPhone: Dropbox now supports automatic photo/video uploads

The iPhone app for Dropbox had provided support for manual upload of photos and video to your shared folders in the past, but today I received an update notice for a version that allows you to turn on automatic upload of your media. Set the Camera Upload option in the new Dropbox app and your media will be uploaded automatically to your Camera Upload folder and then available on any other systems linked to your Dropbox account.  I have been using this feature on my Macbook Pro for a while now and really love the convenience of having my photos wherever I go.   Download Dropbox for Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone

Software: Wordpress 3.4 released and available for install

I try to take a moment each week to make it Wordpress Wednesday on my web sites. This means I check for updates to themes, plugins and the Wordpress software itself. Today I saw that Wordpress has released their 3.4 update for all those self-hosting Wordpress on their own web sites. Offering myself up as a guinea pig, I have installed it on one blog and all seems to be well There are bug fixes, of course, but also a flurry of new features, although most mainly look like "under-the-hood" enhancements that will take a while to be adopted by the theme and plugin community. You can find a complete list of improvements on the Wordpress web site  and get an overview int he video below. Download the latest version of Wordpress here

Product: Actiontec Ethernet Over Coax HPNA Adapters

Actiontec Ethernet Over Coax HPNA Adapter - Twin Pack Just ordered this 2-pack to try and use my existing cable coax wiring to extend my network to the front part of my house. We recently turned off our cable television service (keeping cable Internet), and they had recently run a completely new line to the front of the house to better serve the TV there. Once installed and tested, I will add a wireless access point to the end to broadcast a second circle of wireless in that part of the house, where it has always been a bit hit and miss. The metal lathe in the walls of this older part of the house seem very effective in blocking wireless signals from the back of the house. It isn't the cheapest solution, but I think this hard-wired connection will be more reliable than using a wireless extender and less work than running a CAT5 line to the front of the house when the coax already exists.
