On my Mac/Windows PC…LogMeIn

LogMeIn for Macintosh and Windows If you have more than one computer, or find yourself offering computer support for friends and family, LogMeIn is a MUST HAVE on your Mac or Windows PC. LogMeIn allows you to remotely control any computer from afar, as long as you have a network connection. Here is how to get it. Sign up for a LogMeIn Free account (although you will get an upsell for the Pro version when you do) Log into your new account and choose Add Computer. This will place LogMeIn on this particular system and allow you to control it from another computer (or even your iPhone/iPad) To control this machine, log into your LogMeIn account from any other machine, select a computer from your list of available systems and control away! You can add up to 10 separate computers on the Free LogMeIn account, so you can set up your parent;s computer, your brother, your sister and even that strange cousin 3 states over. On My iPhone/Android…Livestrong.com Calorie Tracker Lite and Full Version

Livestrong.com Calorie Tracker Lite for iOS  |  Livestrong.com Calorie Tracker Lite for iOS (Full Version) Livestrong Calorie Tracker Lite for Android  |  Livestrong Calorie Tracker for Android (Full Version) Since my gall bladder surgery back in October 2012, and also in the past, I have used the Calorie Tracker app to track not only what I eat but also my weight and exercise. For me, most of my weight loss issues have to do with portion control, so monitoring what I eat on a daily basis is very important. Since re-dedicating myself to using the app I have lost mother 16 pounds. I have about another 85 pounds to lose, but tracking in this way seems to work for me. The free Lite version of the app only tracks on your mobile device itself, but the full app will also sync to the web site and provide some other features. I find that entering in foods and meals can be easier using the web site, but in either case you have a large collection of foods to select from when entering your meal

Skype for iOS  |  Skype for Android Skype for iOS and Android brings most of the power of the Skype Desktop application to your smartphone. It supports both audio and video calls over WiFi and 3G cellular data connections, along with text chat services. when I am out and about, I often run Skype on my smartphone to accept calls from family in Sicily, who use it as the exclusive method of calling the us here in the US. Consider upgrading your anti-virus/anti-malware software beyond Microsoft Security Essentials

Recent report finds MS Security Essentials lacking in preventing virus and malware attacks * Macintosh users need not be concerned with this email as -- currently -- the Mac is less a targe to virus and malware attacks Based on this  recent article from ReadWriteWeb.com , I am recommending that you look to another anti-virus/anti-malware program to either replace or supplement Microsoft Security Essentials. According to the article,  Microsoft's Security Essentials Fails Major Antivirus Test , "Microsoft's free Security Essentials antivirus tool has failed the approval process from a leading antivirus test lab, a stinging rebuke for Microsoft's security efforts. Microsoft, for its part, essentially claimed that the tests were unfair, and that the malware that its software didn't detect affected just 0.0033 percent (or just over three one-thousandths of one percent) of its user base. The good news is that there are numerous free antivirus solutions for Windows use

On my Mac…MarsEdit Blog Editor

MarsEdit   As someone who does a lot of blogging, I have always appreciated having a locally installed blog editor for my work. It allows me to easily save drafts of incomplete posts and I find the local editors far superior to most web-based editors, even in the mainstream blogging engines like Wordpress or Blogger. I have been using MarsEdit almost since its creation and have installed it on every Mac I have owned. It allows me to work with Wordpress (self-hosted), Wordpress.com, Blogger, Squarespace, TypePad, Tumblr and more. On Wordpress blogs I can also edit static Pages and create new categories. Of course, I am using MarsEdit to write this very blog post! You can get a free 30-day trial of MarsEdit directly from the Red Sweater Web Site . Red Sweater Web Site Previously in On My Mac... On my iPhone/Android…Flipboard

Flipboard: Your Social News Magazine iOS  |  Flipboard: Your Social News Magazine Android Flipboard has become my favorite app for "flipping" through all the online sources I monitor on a daily basis. This is about as close as I get to reading a magazine these days. I love its lovely presentation of articles and links from traditional news sites, blogs, Twitter, Facebook and all of social media sites. Flipboard's greatest power is the ability to configure it include your most important interests. You customize the news sources to you and your interests so that it has the most value possible -- to you. I have installed Flipboard on my iPhone, my Droid test phone, and my Kindle Fire, although reading on the Kindle is, by far, the best experience. I find that whenever I am waiting in line for something or simply have a few minutes of free time, Flipboard is where I turn. On my Mac/Windows PC…Cyberduck

Look for additional On My Mac…posts in the coming weeks! -- Douglas Cyberduck   Anyone who does anything on the web will have need of an FTP (file transfer protocol) program. You often need to use ftp to upload or download files from your web site or you might also use it to transfer large files between you, your co-workers and/or you clients. On my iPhone/Android…YouTube

"On my iPhone…" is a new series from TechnologyIQ, sharing real world examples of how I use my iPhone, interesting apps and more! YouTube iOS | YouTube Android Over the last year my "TV" viewing has migrated from typical cable television fare to online entertainment almost exclusively. A few months ago, I reverted my cable television account to Internet only and -- in remembrance of my childhood -- installed an antenna (with rabbit ears, no less) on my television so I could receive the few broadcast television shows I watch. My son had led the way in this change in viewing habits, abandoning Nick and Cartoon Network for online shows that interested him more. As you might imagine, YouTube plays a big part in our online viewing habits these days, so the YouTube apps for both iOS and Android are constant companions on our devices. We have our own lists of subscriptions for our favorite shows and use the YouTube to see what new episodes are available, watch the shows o

Technology and New Media News out of CES Las Vegas this week

This week the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is running in Las Vegas, NV and the technology and new media news has been coming fast and furious. I have been highlighting interesting products and information on my social media accounts and I wanted to gather up these links for the blogs. Since there is a lot of crossover between the general technology news and those products useful in new media, I am sharing the post with both my Careers in New Media and my TechnologyIQ blogs. I will add to this list of links as the week progressing and new news arises. Enjoy! All About Douglas - Choose what you want to see and hear from me in 2013!

I have a lot of interests, as most of you already know. Therefore, I have a lot of different blogs, events,  and groups in my portfolio of online engagements. I also try to make myself available wherever people want to converse. This means that each of my interests usually has multiple presences on the Internet. Here is a list of almost all of the ways you can talk with me and learn about what is happening in my life and work. You don't need to, nor should you, try to subscribe to all of them. That would only lead to you seeing multiple copies of the same information. Rather, pick and choose whatever ways you would like to consume my "content." If you are a heavy Facbeook user, you might want to join my pages there. Is Google+ catching your fancy? I have a home over there, too. Maybe email is your thing? No problem, almost all of my content can be emailed directly to your Inbox. My goal is to make my content available in whatever way makes the most sense to you. It also m

On my Mac/Windows PC…Minecraft

On My Mac/Windows PC is an on-going series highlighting the software (and sometimes, hardware) I use on my Mac nearly every day. Look for additional On My Mac…posts in the coming weeks! -- Douglas Minecraft My son got me started with Minescraft about a year ago and I am definitely hooked! I am NOT a big gamer in any way, but the sandbox metaphor of Minecraft -- doing whatever interests you most -- building whatever you like -- keeps me going and always provides something new to do. I even went so far as to set up a multiplayer server here at the house where my son and I, and some select friends can play in our own little world. You can download the client software and play in single player mode to try things out, but at just a little over $26, Minecraft is an inexpensive way to have a lot of fun with your computer -- in your own little world! On my iPhone/Android…Evernote

"On my iPhone…" is a new series from TechnologyIQ, sharing real world examples of how I use my iPhone, interesting apps and more! Evernote ** Also available for Android devices here You have probably heard about Evernote in a hundred different places, as it is the "golden boy" of mobile apps. I must say, though, that it took me quite a while before I was able to fit it into my workflow. Evernote is extremely flexible and everyone has a slightly different way of using it. The program is basically a shareable, cloud-based, database of "notes" that you can create in a variety of ways -- text, web clip, photo, audio. Once a note is added, it can be accessed on the web, on your desktop PC, and on your mobile devices. This makes for a ubiquitous data capture system that can help you grab every idea you have not matter where you might be. You can separate your notes into notebooks and tag each note with a series of keywords to make them easier to find later. For
